The term 'Axminster' has, in the past, been mostly associated with heavily patterned carpets, some of which are still  portrayed in the Elegance and Classic sections of our brochure.  However, our Contemporary ranges reflect a modern take on patterned carpet with designs that have a subtle and graceful approach to pattern and colour.   The  Plains and Textured sections show a variety of alternatives to conventional 'Axminsters' offering a wide diversity of colours, styles and yarn types.   Wool and wool-rich carpets are resistant to combustion, will reduce noise pollution, provide excellent thermal insulation but above all create a feeling of comfort and luxury in your home. We are the only UK carpet manufacturer to handle all aspects of yarn production in house, hence the term ‘Homespun Yarn’.  The finest yarn produces the finest carpets.

Bellbridge is a leader in the industry, designing and supplying quality wool carpets to the discerning customer. We have built our reputation on providing uniquely styled products that meet the needs and requirements of dealers and designers servicing the high-end interior markets. Bellbridge also gives the highest priority to creating and producing products that have a very positive environmental impact. We have initiated several studies to show how our wool carpets can be recycled to positively impact plant growth or be used as a soil amendment.
Bellbridge Carpets is committed to design and environmental initiatives that are leading the way to the future.

Our Story Began in 1928.In a North Carolina mill during the 1920’s, Marshall Field & Co. created an exciting and innovative product – machine-made oriental design rugs of high quality at realistic prices.   These elegant new rugs, almost impossible to distinguish from imported originals, were introduced by Wanamaker’s New York department store in 1928, and the Karastan brand was born.

We first started producing broadloom carpets in the 1930’s.   Not only did we play a big part in introducing American households to the very concept of walking in comfort, we provided the impetus for mass appeal by introducing yet another innovation in 1948: our Kara-Loc® method of weaving.

We’ve been innovators since 1928.  The year American retailer and textile manufacturer Marshall Field built a loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship of a hand-woven rug. From the moment the first Karastan came off the loom (2:02 p.m., April 8, 1928), our name became synonymous with elegant machine-made rugs that rivaled their handmade counterparts.

Langhorne Carpet Company is the oldest woven carpet mill in continuous operation in the United States. Using time-honored weaving methods, we produce the finest in Jacquard woven Wilton and Brussels carpeting available anywhere.

We presently stock over two hundred products in twenty running lines. In addition to our fine line of in-stock products, we also offer restoration carpet and have custom capability.

Throughout the years we have been privileged to provide restoration and reproduction carpeting to such notable sites as Congress Hall (Independence Hall, Philadelphia, PA), Martin Van Buren home, Colonial Williamsburg, US Naval Observatory (residence of the Vice President), Winterthur Museum, Old Boston State House, Henry Ford house, Office of the Secretary of the Treasury, Blair House, and Mother Bethel Church (oldest AME church in the US).

The Louis De Poortere philosophy is based on a simple concept : we aim to be more than just a manufacturer of carpets.

In branching into home decorating, we have had to increase our creativity to meet your aestetic requirements, and this has stimulated us to tranform generic into magic.

Because people are increasingly seeking beauty, elegance, value and comfort for their homes, our designers and technicians have created entire collections that are modern and accessible, and designed to bring you the upmost pleasure.

Because your demands are becoming increasingly specific and your tastes more assured, we have developed bold concepts that are simple and attractive and will enable you to easily reach ultimate sophistication in your floorcovering.

At Louis De Poortere you will find rugs, carpets, stair runners and even border rugs, which you could freely mix and match to make your decorating "home sweet home" experience a pleasure.

Synthetic fibers make up more than 99% of the fiber used by the U.S. carpet industry. Each fiber has strengths and weaknesses that must be recognized and should influence how it is to be used and constructed. Some fibers have very low resiliency and only should be manufactured in high-density loop pile constructions to limit crushing (pile flattening). Other fibers have the tendency to absorb oily soils and other oil-based compounds (including body oils) and should be carefully considered before installing in areas subject to these contaminants. It should be emphasized that there is no perfect fiber and carpet is a fabric that is subjected to incredible abuse through foot traffic, accidental spills, environmental contaminants, and other abuses.

The most recent fiber in carpet technology:  SmartStrand ...made with DuPont™ Sorona® polymer represents a breakthrough in carpet fiber technology, available exclusively in Mohawk Carpet. Natural Rug Fiber Descriptions...
Abaca Rug Fibers
Part of the banana family, abaca is considered the strongest of all natural fibers. The dramatic range of natural colors – from the glossy, white inner fibers to the dark, coarse outer fibers – and variation in texture make abaca uncommonly beautiful as natural fiber rug. There are no dyes used in our abaca products and no backing material. Merida's abaca rugs are 100% natural.

Hemp Rug Fibers
Hemp can grow to between 2-4 meters high, making its fibers among the world's longest soft natural fibers, perfect for natural fiber rugs. Hemp is a long, strong and durable fiber that can be made into fabrics, textiles, paper, plastics, fuels, detergents, cosmetics and foods. Because it does not attract pests, hemp does not require the use of pesticides, making it a very environmentally-friendly crop.

Jute Rug Fibers
Jute is a soft, flexible and hard wearing fiber that is well-suited to a natural floor covering material. Merida Meridian's distinctive 100% jute rugs are woven in India and will resist wear and tear thanks to the abrasion-resistant properties of the fiber. Jute fiber is considered an eco-friendly material that is 100% biodegradable and recyclable. Merida's jute yarns are not dyed.

Paper Rug Fibers
As a truly innovative use of a familiar material, Merida's distinctive paper products begin with virgin wood sourced from sustainable, managed forests in the U.S. The paper yarn is created by twisting strips of paper on a high speed twister that produces firm and strong paper cord. During this process, a wax emulsion is applied to the paper to help it spin smoothly, also adding to the yarn's water resistance. This construction results in an uncommonly strong, durable natural fiber rug that is smooth and soft underfoot.

Seagrass Rug Fibers
Seagrass can be found around the world and is known for retaining its fresh, grassy scent long after it has left the field. The natural fiber is rarely dyed, partly because its natural colors are so varied and attractive, but also because it effectively repels moisture. When seagrass is woven into a rug, the result is a highly spill-resistant, durable, resilient natural fiber rug that is comfortable underfoot and retains the fresh look of the outdoors. Merida's seagrass products bring a touch of exotic elegance and unusual texture to any room.

Sisal Rug Fibers
Sisal fiber is obtained from the agave plant, and Merida Meridian sources the world's highest quality sisal, the longest, finest, and whitest fiber, from the agave plantations of East Africa. Merida's superior spinning capability results in strong, lustrous yarns. Sisal natural fiber rugs are naturally sound-absorbing, antistatic, and extremely durable due to the inherent qualities of this tough, hard wearing fiber.

Sisal is a sustainable and renewable source of woven floor covering material and is a more environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic substitutes. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used in sisal production, and most weeding is done by hand rather than through the use of herbicides.
